Duck egg delight.
My first ever duck egg was laid today by a Cayuga, dark green and hidden in a corner. I ate it! I have never eaten a duck egg and was worried because I have heard reports that many people find them no good to eat. I thought it was fine! Had it sunny side up. I feel so brave.

Re: Duck egg delight.
I LOVE duck eggs. They have a slight buttery flavor. People find them no good to eat because of the fears of fat and cholesterol, of which I try not to concern myself.
Congrats on the lucky duck egg!

What kind of nest box set up do you have for your ducks? This egg was just on the floor in the very wet, disgusting bedding. I CANNOT keep that bedding dry. I put a low nest box in and filled it with shavings, but have a feeling it's too tall for the duck to get into and don't know that she will want to lay there anyway.
I thought about placing the egg in the box to give he ra clue she should lay there, but I was too excited to eat the egg. My bad.

I use milk crates. But it seems everybody went back on strike. When we had callducks, they layed BESIDE the milk crate.
Re: Duck egg delight.
I just have a square box made out of 2X4 with a plywood bottom. The Call duck likes it.

I use a molassas tub, turned bottom side up and cut a doorway in it and they seem to like it OK
Have also used those plastic totes, same thing turn upside down and cut a doorway

My ducks lay their eggs on the muddy, muddy ground! I move their nest box to where they have laid, and they lay somewhere else. IT's a game. Not a fun game.
No matter what I do, their bedding is never dry! I feel like a failure at housekeeping.

Re: Duck egg delight.
My coop is soaked re-ducks. It's a wonder my birds continue to do well -- the holes in the roof are working to my benefit right now. The ducks may need to free range, they keep up this muckiness!
Re: Duck egg delight.
That;s why I'm loving my Calls. All of the duckiness with a fraction of the mess.

Fowler, how do Call ducks differ from others in the messy department? I hear the yare very noisy Ducks, they get their name from when the neighbours call to tell you to shut your damn ducks up. Is this correct.
PS.. this is the first time I have ever seen may avatar. Damn I'm good looking!

I just find it is less, no doubt because they are smaller. Mind you, I only have a pair. If I had 20 it would probably be different.
Noise? Some. But really I don't find them any noisier than the Silver Appleyards were. They chattered constantly.
