Bottling with mason jars
Hi All
We bottle alot of stuff and find it great here is the list of stuff we done so far
Moose
rabbit
fish
jam's
beets
Soup
chile
sea snails
pickled eggs
chicken
Turkey
Seal
beans
I'M sure i missed some stuff, It makes a quick meal when you dont have time to cook or if out camping/fishing
Its easy to do just takes a little time
It stores great, we keep it in the basement in the panitry, we got food for months if needed
if it can be canned it can be bottled

Re: Bottling with mason jars
Not sure what your difference is between bottling and canning.
Out here we just call it canning
Do you do beans in a pressure canner?
Salsa is a big one here, have a mango/tomato one that is real popular

Re: Bottling with mason jars
Hi
Yea canning and bottling are the same kinda, but in my area when its in a bottle (Mason jar) we call it bottling and when its in a can we call it canning
and to defend my post it did call it Bottling with mason jars
We use bottles because there reusable mostly and you dont need a can opener
I kinda always wondered why people call bottling canning ?
I think the saying "When in Rome" would work here

Re: Bottling with mason jars
That's interesting, Never seen/heard anyone can in cans. What kinda set up is it?
I guess here it's a generic term referring to the process not the container.
Learn something new every day
Edit to Add: about the beans ...... have a process recipe?
Edit-edit to Add: also we call them sealers not bottles. But we don't 'seal' them we can or process them. Yours seems more linear thought
Kinda funny differences from there to here
My dad used to say 'back in the day' (dirty 30's) when the east coasters send us dustbowlers relief supplies, thanks bye the way, neighborly of y'all, around here they tried to pick the mold off the blue cheese and didn't have the foggiest idea what salt cod was about lol.
Now wonder why it was blue cheese, was it a staple there back in the day?
cheers

Re: Bottling with mason jars
For us Canning would be using a tin can and a canning machine but the price for this is way up now back 20 years ago it was much cheaper, My parents sold off the canning supplys years back and switched to bottles

As of recipes for the bean its kinda all up in my head we use baked beans, so cook your baked beans as you would normaly do it but stop cooking a hour early then load up the bottles put them in the pot , boil for 1.5 hours remove from the pot wait for the seals to pop as we call it , that when its sealed
bobs your uncle and fanny is your aunt and you got beans in a bottle
Blue chesse is not a newfoundland thing for sure but Salt cod now there you got something , I did not know we sent out food relief supplys back in the
30's i know back then newfoundland was very poor
Back in 1930's Newfoundland wasent even a part of canada that happend in 1949 when we let canada in

Re: Bottling with mason jars
This is very interesting! I also was a little surprised at the use of the term bottling.
Hub bottles beer and we bottle wine. It is a cold process. We never call it canning, we call it bottling. BUt if you preserve cherries, in their juice, in a jar, that's canning, it requires heat. Even making jam is canning jam. Hot process.
Hmm. Interesting.

Re: Bottling with mason jars
I think it depends on your cultural background. The Aussies and I think the British use the term 'bottling'.
