I breed Berkshire pigs and am interested in meat processing.

I'm just starting out so haven't been able to get into too much else. I'm very interested in meat goats but my hogs keep me pretty busy. I'd also like to get a milk cow or two once I'm settled.

We don't have an interest in goats. Considered it, but decided against it. We enjoy our Jerseys and didn't see any reason to get goats too.

I am not sure if they still have them and they are a long way away, but some relatives of mine @ St. Pierre were trying to sell a few meat goats last summer. I don't know how much they were, but they were wanting to get into beef instead. I don't think they found any buyers. Maybe they would bring them out this way if they still had them and had a buyer. Would you want me to find out about them?

A great book to have if you are starting out with milk cows is "The Family Cow" by Dirk van Loon. There is a lot of good information packed into that little book.

What kind of milker are you using? Or are you milking by hand?

We are milking by hand. That is all I have ever known and I taught my husband how to hand milk as well. I didn't want the hassles of cleaning a machine and making sure it is truly clean enough without harsh chemicals, and we have heard that sometimes the machine is more hassle than its worth anyway...by hand is cheaper and they are always ready.
