Welcome to the threads! If I may, what has you in the gulf? Travel with work? Military? Glad to have you.

Ryan and I started with 11 chickens, and now have goats, rabbits, guineas, ducks and will be doing turkey's again.

That's awesome. Get home safe Smile

I can only stress this so much, as it was stressed to me: Ducks are MESSY. You never really get a grip on how messy until you have them.

Smile Yes, but ducks are worth it aren't they, Sweetened?

We have a couple of Jerseys. We've had 3 to date. They are the most efficient and have an awesome cream content. They can handle rolled barley and that makes the thickest cream! Make sure that you don't get the most aggressive one, nor the one who stays away. Ideally, you want a gentle soul that will do anything for you. You want to make sure that they have a tight udder, a straight back and have had no milking issues. You also want to know if they kick (and how...straight ahead, roundabout, or aim and kick...ouch!) and so on. If they have horns, they often have more attitude too. They all have unique personalities. None of ours have been the same...and none of my parents' were either.

We found that feeding them chop first, then milking is the best way to go. If you feed them as you milk, they get impatient and greedy. The feed then milk method leads to less hassles. We have actually had our cows start to fall asleep at times. lol

I would recommend an awesome book..."The Family Cow" by Dirk van Loon. It is a good one to have on hand if you are starting out.

Hey

You know when I said we want cows, put it this way we are not much on drinking milk  Beating a dead horse

And we don’t like duck eggs LOL

Now we do like chicken eggs, but we replace our hens after the age of two

The two year old chickens tend to be good curry Wink

33Gal im using trying to cross breed some crays blue and white might make red  That’s the plan anyway color morphs are a strange thing  LOL

I might convert a 55 Gal tank into a chicken brooder; I think it would be nice Smile
