Anyone Tried Pallet Gardening

I've seen where people use pallets on their side as a sort of vertical (slanted) garden. But this recently caught my eye.

Has anyone ever tried this? Did it work well?

Saw an upright pallet garden but the owner said watering it mostly washed the dirt out so it didn't work so well.

I wonder why this arrangement is any better than just banging together a box without the pieces across the top? My friend grows her herbs like this, but it just looks like getting dirt in and then out would be a pain. I suppose it's a use of pre-made materials. But if all the old pallets were used for gardening or building fences or coops, what would the teenagers lug up dead end roads and set on fire?

You might want to consider using a poly as a back cover to prevent the soil from washing away ? would keep in the moisture a bit longer as well as help with keeping the heat in the soil ?? The picture doesn't show the back so it could have a solid back ????

The one I saw had landscape fabric or builder's paper stapled on the back to keep the dirt in.

I think the slats are suppose to suppress weeds. But then landscape fabric over a regular box would work too.

I think I would just go with a box. But it sure is a nice idea to re-use pallets! You can do lots with those things. I looked at the 4 pallets I had, put them next to each other in a square and build a shed around it. LOL It worked.
